The Edo State Police Command has launched a manhunt for armed attackers following a deadly shooting near the main gate of the University of Benin in Ugbowo, Benin City.

According to preliminary police reports, the attack occurred around 5:00 p.m. on Sunday when unidentified gunmen travelling in a white Mercedes-Benz GLK intercepted another Mercedes-Benz carrying three occupants identified as Onwuke Blessed, Alexander Omogiate, and Chinenye Christian Mbagwu.

Police said the assailants blocked the victims’ vehicle shortly after it exited the university gate before opening fire and fleeing the scene.

A female passerby identified as Dorathy Ubah was also struck by gunfire during the attack.

The victims were immediately rushed to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital for medical attention, where Alexander Omogiate was later confirmed dead.

The remaining victims are reportedly receiving treatment for their injuries.

Reacting to the incident, Edo State Commissioner of Police Monday Agbonika condemned the attack and assured residents that security operatives are working to track down those responsible.

He warned criminal groups and hoodlums operating around university communities to leave the state, stressing that the police command remains committed to tackling violent crime and ensuring public safety.
