The Edo State Police Command has launched a manhunt
for armed attackers following a deadly shooting near the main gate of the
University of Benin in Ugbowo, Benin City.
According to preliminary police reports, the attack
occurred around 5:00 p.m. on Sunday when unidentified gunmen travelling in a
white Mercedes-Benz GLK intercepted another Mercedes-Benz carrying three
occupants identified as Onwuke Blessed, Alexander Omogiate, and Chinenye
Christian Mbagwu.
Police said the assailants blocked the victims’
vehicle shortly after it exited the university gate before opening fire and
fleeing the scene.
A female passerby identified as Dorathy Ubah was also
struck by gunfire during the attack.
The victims were immediately rushed to the University
of Benin Teaching Hospital for medical attention, where Alexander Omogiate was
later confirmed dead.
The remaining victims are reportedly receiving
treatment for their injuries.
Reacting to the incident, Edo State Commissioner of
Police Monday Agbonika condemned the attack and assured residents that security
operatives are working to track down those responsible.
He warned criminal groups and hoodlums operating
around university communities to leave the state, stressing that the police
command remains committed to tackling violent crime and ensuring public safety.
