The spokesperson of the Nigeria Police Force in Delta
State, Bright Edafe, has assured that those responsible for the alleged sexual
assaults during a festival in Ozoro will be identified and prosecuted.
In a statement shared on X, Edafe described the
incident as “alarming, disgusting and embarrassing,” revealing that the
Commissioner of Police, Aina Adesola, has ordered a full investigation.
He emphasized that no cultural practice or tradition
should override the fundamental rights and dignity of citizens, adding that the
command is committed to ensuring justice for the victims.
The police also appealed to witnesses and members of
the public to provide useful information that could aid ongoing investigations.
The development follows the circulation of disturbing
videos online showing several women being harassed and assaulted by groups of
men during the festival.
Reports indicate that the annual event, held in March
in Ozoro, allegedly enforces restrictions on women’s movement in public spaces.
Those who defy the directive are reportedly targeted by participants, leading
to incidents of harassment and assault.
Authorities have condemned the acts and reiterated
their commitment to holding perpetrators accountable while working to restore
public confidence and safety.
