In response to a viral video exposing police officers
extorting motorists along the Benin bypass, the Nigeria Police Force has acted
decisively to address the misconduct.
Six officers, including their supervising Chief
Superintendent of Police, were promptly summoned to the Force Headquarters to
face disciplinary measures. The officers were made to appear before the
Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, who strongly
condemned their behavior as “shameful, distasteful, and utterly unacceptable.”
IGP Egbetokun has ordered immediate disciplinary
action, resulting in the initiation of orderly room trials for the officers
involved. The six erring personnel have also been formally queried.
The Nigeria Police Force reaffirmed its zero-tolerance
policy on extortion and unprofessional conduct, stressing its unwavering
commitment to professionalism, integrity, and accountability. The public is
assured that no officer found guilty of such misconduct will be spared
appropriate sanctions.
This incident serves as a reminder of the Force’s
determination to maintain public trust and ensure ethical conduct among its
ranks.
