In a decisive operation against kidnappers terrorizing
parts of Delta State, police operatives have killed five suspects during a
series of coordinated raids across Delta and Anambra states.
Spokesperson for the Delta State Police Command, SP
Bright Edafe, confirmed the development in a statement on Sunday, saying the
suspects had been responsible for kidnappings around Ubulu-Uku, Issele-Uku,
Issele-Asagba, and surrounding areas.
Acting on credible intelligence, the police stormed a
hideout in the Agu-Amawbia forest in Anambra State, recovering an AK-47 rifle
and 132 rounds of live ammunition.
The operation then extended to another criminal camp
located between Issele-Asagba and Otulu in Delta State, where the gang, led by
a notorious kingpin identified as Bellow Abubakar, attempted to ambush the
security forces.
“A fierce gun battle ensued after the suspects opened
fire on our operatives,” Edafe stated. “However, the superior firepower of our
men overwhelmed them.”
According to Edafe, five suspects, including Bellow
Abubakar, sustained serious gunshot wounds and were apprehended. They were
rushed to the hospital but later confirmed dead.
Further combing of the forest led to the recovery of
two additional AK-47 rifles and 18 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition.
Meanwhile, a manhunt is underway for other gang
members who fled the scene with injuries.
The Delta State Police Command reassured the public of
its commitment to maintaining peace and security, while urging residents to
report suspicious movements around their communities.
