Governor Adeleke Addresses Defection
Rumors Following Meeting with President Tinubu
In the wake of recent speculations regarding a
potential defection, Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State has firmly denied
any intentions to leave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). This clarification
comes after his meeting with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which had sparked
rumors of a possible shift in political allegiance.
A
Courtesy Visit Misinterpreted
Governor Adeleke, accompanied by his brother Dr. Deji
Adeleke and nephew, Afrobeat artist Davido, visited President Tinubu at his
private residence in Ikoyi, Lagos. The meeting, described by Adeleke's
spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, as a "routine courtesy visit," was
intended to foster intergovernmental relations and had no political undertones.
Rasheed emphasized:
“The media speculation about likely or imminent
defection is fake news. Governor Adeleke remains a member and leader of the PDP
in Osun State. The visit by the Adeleke dynasty to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu
is a routine courtesy visit. Any reading of defection agenda into the visit is
mere fake news.”
Political
Dynamics and Reactions
The meeting has stirred reactions within political
circles. The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State, through former
Speaker Timothy Owoeye, dismissed the possibility of Adeleke joining their
ranks, stating, "We don’t see Adeleke as a member or part of the APC. The
APC ticket is not for sale."
Within the PDP, concerns have been raised about
internal dynamics and the need for unity, especially with the 2026 governorship
elections on the horizon. Adeleke's absence from recent party activities,
including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar's visit to Osun, has been noted,
prompting discussions about the party's cohesion.
Adeleke's Political Trajectory
Governor Adeleke's political journey has been marked
by significant milestones. After serving as a senator, he won the 2022 Osun
gubernatorial election under the PDP, ending the APC's 12-year rule in the
state. His administration has since been focused on delivering on campaign
promises and strengthening the state's infrastructure and economy.
As the political landscape evolves, Governor Adeleke's
reaffirmation of his commitment to the PDP serves to stabilize the party's
position in Osun State. Observers will be keenly watching how these
developments influence the broader political dynamics leading up to the 2026
elections.
