The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) has
reaffirmed its support for Cristiano Ronaldo’s continued involvement with the
national team, describing the veteran forward as an important figure in the
country’s football history.
FPF president Pedro Proença said Ronaldo remains an
integral part of Portugal’s squad whenever he is fit and available for
selection.
In a statement shared on the federation’s X account on
Monday, Proença praised the five-time Ballon d’Or winner’s contribution to
Portuguese football and defended his continued selection for the national team.
Proença described Ronaldo as an icon of Portuguese
football, highlighting his more than two decades of service to the national
side.
He also insisted that Ronaldo’s place in the squad is
justified by his performances and sporting qualities, adding that the forward
will remain part of the team whenever he is fit and ready to play.
The FPF president also addressed reports of a
disagreement between Ronaldo and Portugal coach Jorge Jesus, characterising the
situation as a misunderstanding that should be resolved within the team.
According to Proença, Ronaldo remains closely
connected to both the national team and Portuguese supporters. He noted that
the veteran forward captained the side in the first of Portugal’s four matches.
Proença further pointed to Ronaldo’s decision to
continue representing Portugal despite having the option to end his
international career at the World Cup, saying the decision reflected his
commitment to the national team.
With the latest four-match schedule now completed,
Proença said there is time for the relevant parties to discuss the reported
disagreement and seek a resolution.
He ultimately reiterated that Ronaldo remains part of
Portugal’s football legacy and could continue to represent the country whenever
the national team coach selects him.
