President Tinubu Approves 65 Ambassadorial Appointments to Countries and UN

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the postings of 31 career and 34 non-career ambassadors to various countries and the United Nations, bringing the total number of new ambassadors and High Commissioners to 65.

The list, released on March 6, 2026 by Presidential Spokesman Bayo Onanuga, follows the Senate’s confirmation of the ambassadors-designate last December.

Among the notable appointments:

  • Mahmud Yakubu, former INEC chairman, to Qatar
  • Femi Fani-Kayode to Germany
  • Reno Omokri to Mexico
  • Senator Jimoh Ibrahim to the United Nations
  • Abdulrahman Dambazau, ex-Chief of Army Staff and former Minister of Interior, to China
  • Okezie Ikpeazu, former Governor of Abia State, to Spain

Other postings include missions to Israel, the Vatican, Japan, Greece, Poland, the UK, Australia, USA, Russia, France, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, Tunisia, and Trinidad & Tobago.

For the career ambassadorial appointments, some of the notable assignments include:

  • Amb. Nwabiola Ezenwa Chukwumeka to Côte d’Ivoire
  • Amb. Mohammed Mahmud Lele to Algeria
  • Amb. Jane Adams (Nee Okon) Michael to Jamaica
  • Amb. Magaji Umar to DR Congo
  • Amb. Salau Hamza Mohammed to Iran
  • Bello Dogon-Daji Haliru to Thailand

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that it has received agréments from the United Kingdom for Ambassador Aminu Dalhatu and from France for Ambassador Ayo Oke. The remaining 62 designated envoys have had their nominations sent to the respective countries for approval in accordance with standard diplomatic procedures.

This large-scale diplomatic reshuffle reflects the administration’s commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s global representation and international relations across multiple continents and at the United Nations.
