Real Madrid announced on Monday that coach Xabi Alonso
has left the club by mutual consent, with former player Alvaro Arbeloa named as
his replacement.
The decision came a day after Madrid’s 3–2 loss to
Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup final, marking Alonso’s final match in
charge of the first team.
“Real Madrid announces that, by mutual agreement
between the club and Xabi Alonso, it has been decided to bring his tenure as
first-team coach to an end,” the club stated.
In a separate statement, Los Blancos confirmed that
Arbeloa would take over first-team duties, though the club did not disclose the
length of the 42-year-old’s contract. “Arbeloa has been the coach of Castilla
since June 2025 and has developed his entire coaching career in Real Madrid’s
academy since 2020,” the club added.
Alonso, who joined Madrid in June 2025 following Carlo
Ancelotti’s departure, struggled to establish consistency in La Liga, leaving
the team second in the table, four points behind Barcelona. Despite a
late-season revival that included five consecutive wins, the Super Cup defeat
ultimately ended his tenure.
Arbeloa, a former Madrid defender, now steps into his
first senior managerial role at the club, tasked with steering Los Blancos
through the remainder of the season.
