Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappe has been diagnosed
with a sprain in his left knee while in Paris and will follow a conservative
treatment plan, the club confirmed on Monday.
Mbappe’s camp stated that the striker is being
accompanied by members of Real Madrid’s medical staff and undergoing further
tests to optimise his recovery, with no surgical intervention currently
planned.
“After tests carried out on our player Kylian Mbappe
by French specialist doctors, under the supervision of Real Madrid’s Medical
Services, the diagnosis of a sprain in his left knee has been confirmed, as
well as the suitability of the conservative treatment currently being
followed,” Real Madrid said in a statement.
The 25-year-old has been struggling with an injury to
the external ligament of his left knee since late 2025 and missed last week’s
Champions League play-off second leg against Benfica due to persistent pain in
training.
Real Madrid coach Alvaro Arbeloa confirmed that the
decision for Mbappe to rest was agreed upon by the player, the club, and
France’s national team medical staff.
“It was a bit of a consensus between everyone. We
think the best thing is that he stops, recovers, and comes back at 100
percent,” Arbeloa said, adding that the recovery period may take some time.
Mbappe, who has scored 38 goals in 33 appearances this
season, will miss Real Madrid’s upcoming La Liga clash against Getafe on
Monday. His availability for the Champions League last-16 tie against
Manchester City, scheduled for March 11 and March 17, remains uncertain.
France’s national team also faces two friendlies in
the United States at the end of March — against Brazil on March 26 in Boston
and Colombia on March 29 in Washington — ahead of their World Cup opener
against Senegal on June 16.
