Political economist Prof. Pat Utomi has called
on President
Bola Tinubu to undertake total restructuring of Nigeria before the
2027 general election.
Speaking at the June
12: Annual Democracy Day National Dialogue, Utomi emphasized that
restructuring would stabilize and advance democracy in the country.
Utomi argued that the current democracy falls short of
the ideals for which Chief
MKO Abiola sacrificed his life.
“The present democracy is not the type of democracy
Chief Abiola sacrificed his life for,” he said, highlighting the need for a new
approach.
Utomi identified the 1999 constitution and the
country’s political and economic structure as major challenges to democracy.
He urged Nigerians to accept restructuring as a means
to deepen democracy and strengthen the nation.
“The agitation for total restructuring will stabilize
and advance democracy in the country,” he said.
The economist lauded Nigerians for their sacrifices in
entrenching democratic rule and urged them to guard democracy against
anti-democratic forces.
He also called on President Tinubu to listen to the
agitations of various ethnic groups, including Afenifere and Ohaneze, on
restructuring.
