The Rivers State Government has approved the recruitment of 5,000 teachers as part of efforts to improve the quality of education across the state.

The approval was granted by the Rivers State Executive Council at its second meeting of 2026, which was chaired by Governor Siminalayi Fubara and attended by the Deputy Governor, Ngozi Nma-Odu.

Briefing journalists after the meeting at the Government House in Port Harcourt on Tuesday, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Information and Communications, Honor Sirawoo, said the decision was intentionally focused on boosting educational standards.

He explained that out of the 5,000 teachers approved for employment, 3,000 will be posted to basic and primary schools, while the remaining 2,000 will serve in post-primary institutions across the state.

Sirawoo noted that the recruitment exercise is part of a broader strategy to strengthen public service delivery, with education identified as a key priority of the current administration.

He disclosed that the latest approval brings the total number of individuals employed under Governor Fubara’s administration to approximately 9,500.

The permanent secretary recalled previous recruitment efforts, including the engagement of 2,000 health workers, 1,500 employees at the Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, and 1,000 staff for the Universal Basic Education programme.

Reaffirming the government’s commitment to professionalism and fairness, Sirawoo assured that the recruitment process would be conducted transparently and strictly on merit, ensuring that only qualified candidates are selected.

He added that while the state government continues to expand its workforce, the focus remains on delivering effective services rather than seeking publicity, stressing that the administration’s actions are driven by the interests of Rivers State residents.

Also speaking at the meeting, the Commissioner for Employment Generation and Economic Empowerment, Chisom Gbali, described the approval as a major boost, noting that the initiative would significantly benefit his ministry.
