Bukayo Saka marked his 300th appearance for Arsenal
F.C. with the decisive goal as the Premier League leaders secured a narrow 1–0
victory over Brighton & Hove Albion F.C. at the American Express Community
Stadium.
The 24-year-old winger became the fourth-youngest
player in Arsenal history to reach the milestone and celebrated with a
first-half strike that ultimately proved enough to seal all three points.
Although Mikel Arteta’s side delivered a below-par
performance for long stretches, their resilience and defensive discipline
helped them open a seven-point lead over defending champions Manchester City
F.C. in the title race.
City had earlier dropped points in a surprise 2-2 draw
against Nottingham Forest F.C. at the Etihad Stadium, leaving the Premier
League title firmly in Arsenal’s hands for now.
Despite City still having a game in hand and a crucial
meeting with Arsenal scheduled for April, the Gunners have responded strongly
to pressure by winning three consecutive league matches.
Having surrendered strong title positions to
Manchester City in both 2023 and 2024, Arsenal appear more composed this season
as they chase their first English league title since 2004.
Early Goal Proves Enough
The visitors had an early scare when goalkeeper David
Raya nearly gifted Brighton a goal with a misplaced pass to Carlos Baleba. His
attempted lob looked destined for the net before Gabriel Magalhães cleared it
off the line.
Arsenal responded quickly and took the lead in the
ninth minute. Saka cut in from the right and fired a powerful shot that
deflected off Baleba and slipped through the legs of Brighton goalkeeper Bart
Verbruggen.
The goal was Saka’s second in his last 19 appearances
across all competitions.
Brighton Push for Equaliser
Brighton increased the pressure in the second half as
Georginio Rutter tested Raya with a sharp half-volley, while Yankuba Minteh and
Jack Hinshelwood also came close to finding an equaliser.
Arsenal, however, remained disciplined at the back
despite missing injured defender William Saliba.
Set-Piece Debate Continues
Ahead of the match, Brighton manager Fabian Hürzeler
had criticised Arsenal for delaying set-pieces, even complaining to the fourth
official during the match.
Arsenal’s heavy reliance on set-pieces has been widely
debated, especially after both goals in their recent victory over Chelsea F.C.
came from corners.
The Gunners have now scored 16 goals from corners this
season—matching the Premier League record for a single campaign—and 19 goals
overall from dead-ball situations.
Despite criticism that Arsenal could become the
“ugliest” champions in league history, Arteta dismissed the claims, insisting
that results like their win over Chelsea were “beautiful”.
While their performance against Brighton lacked flair,
Arsenal once again showed the determination that could carry them to their
first league title in over two decades.
