The Enugu State Government has demolished a bungalow
in Umueze Awkunanaw, Nkanu West Local Government Area, after it
was discovered to have served as a kidnap hideout.
Officials said the action aligns with state laws
and the Mbah administration’s zero-tolerance policy on crime.
According to security sources, operatives recently
rescued a kidnapped victim from the building, allegedly owned by Igwenagu
Ogbodo, the prime suspect, who escaped with some gang members during a
raid.
During the demolition exercise, the Nkanu West
Council Chairman, John Ogbodo, commended Governor Peter Mbah
for his firm stance against insecurity.
“The prime suspect and his gang kidnapped the person
and brought him here. He was rescued, and his vehicle was recovered. Some arms
and ammunition were equally recovered,” Ogbodo said.
He noted that the demolition was carried out in line
with Enugu State’s anti-crime laws, which allow the state to pull down
any property used to harbour criminals or facilitate crime.
“This is not the first house to be demolished by this
administration, neither is it the second nor the third. But this is the first
one in Nkanu West, and I know this will serve as a deterrent to other criminal
elements,” he added.
The council boss urged residents and landlords to be
vigilant and monitor activities on their premises to prevent criminals from
using them as safe havens.
“Anyone who owns property in Enugu State should be
mindful of their tenants. Any house used to harbour criminality or kidnap
victims stands demolished,” he warned.
Ogbodo expressed confidence in the state’s ability to
apprehend the fleeing suspects, assuring that no criminal would evade justice
under the Mbah administration.
Community Reaction
Some residents who witnessed the demolition described
the suspect as a notorious criminal and backed the government’s action.
A local elder, Ikechukwu Amos, confirmed that
Ogbodo had a history of criminal behaviour.
“I can’t deny it, he is a criminal. We have been
advising him, but he refused. He just came back from prison and returned to bad
company, using this place for all manner of illicit activities,” Amos said.
Another resident, Edeh Kingsley, condemned the
suspect’s lifestyle.
“Any young man who chooses kidnapping over work should
face the consequences. Fela, as he is called, is lazy. He finds pleasure in
drinking and crime,” he said.
The councillor representing the area, Uchenna
Jideofor, also praised Governor Mbah’s resolve in enforcing the
anti-kidnapping law, describing the demolition as a welcome development.
“The suspect is notorious for criminal activities.
This should serve as a lesson to others who have chosen the fast lane,” he
added.
Jideofor urged residents to cooperate with security agencies by providing timely information to prevent similar incidents.
