Senegal national football team defiantly showcased the
Africa Cup of Nations trophy on Saturday, March 28, ahead of their
international friendly against Peru at the Stade de France, despite being
instructed to return it.
The action follows a controversial ruling by the
Confederation of African Football (CAF), which overturned Senegal’s 1–0 victory
over Morocco in the final and instead awarded a 3–0 win to the host nation.
Before kickoff, Senegal captain Kalidou Coulibaly led
his teammates on a celebratory lap with the trophy, shortly after a pre-match
performance by renowned singer Youssou Ndour.
Coulibaly, alongside goalkeeper Edouard Mendy, later
placed the trophy in the VIP section in front of dignitaries, including
officials from the Senegalese Football Federation.
The original final in Rabat was marred by controversy
after Senegal players briefly left the pitch in protest over a late penalty
decision. Captain Sadio Mane eventually led the team back onto the field, and
after Morocco failed to convert the penalty, Senegal secured victory through an
extra-time goal from Pape Gueye.
CAF later ruled that the temporary walk-off violated
competition rules, leading to the reversal of the result.
Senegal has since challenged the decision at the Court
of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) and continues to maintain that they are the
rightful champions.
Ahead of the match, thousands of supporters gathered
in Paris, with fans marching through Saint-Denis in celebration before filling
the stadium.
Saint-Denis mayor Bally Bagayoko praised the team,
describing them as a source of pride and unity for Africans.
The friendly fixture marks Senegal’s first appearance
since the AFCON final as they continue preparations for the upcoming World Cup.
