As concerns grow over rising housing costs in Ghana,
the country’s Acting Rent Commissioner, Frederick Opoku, has reminded landlords
that rent charges must comply with existing laws.
Opoku stated that landlords are not permitted to
arbitrarily set or increase rent without proper approval from the Rent Control
Department. According to him, the law requires that rental rates be assessed
and certified before any charges can be implemented or adjusted.
He explained that enforcement of the regulation has
been weak, largely due to a lack of awareness among property owners about the
legal requirements.
The commissioner emphasized that once an official
assessment has been conducted and a certificate issued, landlords are not
allowed to increase rent outside the approved terms.
His remarks come amid growing public concern over
escalating rental prices, as many residents struggle to cope with the rising
cost of accommodation across the country.
