President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has stirred reactions
online after updating his Facebook profile picture to prominently feature the
Africa Cup of Nations trophy behind him.
The move comes shortly after the Confederation of
African Football stripped Senegal of its 2025 AFCON title and awarded a
retrospective 3-0 victory to Morocco, weeks after the original final result.
CAF’s Appeals Board ruled that Senegal forfeited the
match due to a temporary walk-off during the game, despite initially securing a
1–0 win after extra time.
In response, the Senegalese Football Federation has
firmly rejected the decision and insists the trophy will remain in Senegal.
The federation’s Secretary General, Abdoulaye Sow,
criticised CAF’s ruling, describing it as unjust and claiming it has sparked
widespread outrage.
Speaking to Le Soleil, Sow said the federation is
engaging with relevant stakeholders and remains committed to challenging the
decision.
He reassured citizens that Senegal has a strong case
and vowed that the trophy would not be returned.
Faye’s symbolic display of the AFCON trophy has been
widely interpreted as a show of national solidarity and defiance amid the
ongoing dispute.
