A Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Wahab Shittu, has
urged President Bola Tinubu to open diplomatic talks with the United States
following a reported threat of military action from former U.S. President
Donald Trump.
Trump, in a social media post on Saturday, alleged
ongoing violence against Christians in Nigeria and warned that the United
States could suspend all aid to the country. He also claimed to have directed
the newly renamed U.S. Department of War to “prepare for possible action.”
In response, Shittu called for immediate diplomatic
engagement, stressing that President Tinubu should personally lead discussions
with the U.S. and other international partners to prevent an escalation.
“Our president should place all other engagements on
hold and focus on addressing this existential threat to Nigeria and her
people,” Shittu said during a press briefing.
He also appealed for unity among Nigerians,
emphasizing the need to work together with the African Union (AU), Commonwealth
nations, and world leaders to de-escalate tensions.
“The situation demands swift and coordinated action,”
he added. “We must engage, plead, and pursue peace with the U.S. authorities to
avoid a major crisis. May God guide Nigeria through this difficult period.”
