Marcus Rashford’s first La Liga goal
wasn’t enough as Sevilla stunned the Catalans to climb into the top four.
Barcelona suffered their first defeat of the season
on Sunday night, falling 4–1 to Sevilla in a fiery La Liga clash at the Ramon
Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium.
The result leaves Hansi
Flick’s side second in the table, two points behind leaders Real Madrid,
who defeated Villarreal on Saturday, while Sevilla climb provisionally
to fourth place.
Sanchez and
Romero Put Sevilla in Control
Veteran winger Alexis
Sanchez gave Sevilla the lead from the penalty spot early in the first half
after Ronald Araujo clumsily brought down Isaac Romero in the
box.
Romero, who had already
missed two good chances, soon made amends — slotting home from Ruben
Vargas’s cutback to double the hosts’ advantage.
Barcelona looked flat and
disorganised, still reeling from their midweek Champions League loss to
Paris Saint-Germain.
Rashford Pulls
One Back, But Lewandowski Misses From the Spot
Marcus Rashford briefly reignited hope for the Catalans when he
volleyed in Pedri Gonzalez’s cross in first-half stoppage time, scoring
his first La Liga goal.
However, Barcelona’s best
chance to equalise slipped away in the second half when Robert Lewandowski
missed a crucial penalty — firing wide after a hesitant, stuttering run-up.
Moments later, Roony
Bardghji squandered another opportunity to level the score, shooting
straight at Sevilla goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos.
Carmona and
Adams Seal the Rout
Sevilla punished
Barcelona’s wastefulness late in the game. Defender Jose Carmona drilled
a low effort past Wojciech Szczesny to make it 3–1, before Akor Adams
added a fourth in stoppage time to complete a memorable victory.
The heavy defeat marks an
early setback for Flick, who has been under pressure to steady Barcelona after
a mixed start to life at Camp Nou.
