The suspects allegedly invaded Igoba
community, injuring residents and attempting to assassinate the traditional
ruler.
The Ondo State Police
Command has arrested 10 suspects in connection with an armed attack
on Igoba community in Akure North Local Government Area of the
state.
The Public Relations
Officer of the Command, DSP Olusola Ayanlade, confirmed the arrest
in a statement issued on Sunday.
According to the police,
the hoodlums, armed with guns, knives, charms, and other dangerous weapons,
stormed the community around 11:30 p.m. on Thursday, injuring several
residents and carting away their belongings.
During the invasion, the
assailants reportedly targeted the palace of the traditional ruler, Oba John
Adinlewa, who narrowly escaped an assassination attempt.
“On that day, a group of
hoodlums, armed with firearms, knives, charms, and other dangerous weapons,
invaded Igoba community with the intent to wreak havoc,” DSP Ayanlade said.
“They attacked one Mrs. Ogunoye Oluomo, dispossessed her of her belongings, and
later advanced to the palace of His Royal Highness, Oba Adinlewa John, where
they attempted to assassinate the monarch. Fortunately, the royal father
narrowly escaped.”
He added that the Commissioner
of Police, Adebowale Lawal, immediately deployed tactical teams led by the Assistant
Commissioner of Police (Operations) to the area, leading to the arrest of
the suspects.
The police spokesperson
said the suspects had confessed to their roles in the attack and would be
charged to court upon completion of investigations.
Items recovered from the
suspects include two locally fabricated pistols, one single-barrel gun,
several rounds of live ammunition, assorted charms, knives, and machetes.
“The suspects are in
custody and will face prosecution as soon as investigations are concluded,”
Ayanlade stated.
