Vice President Kashim Shettima has called on Nigerians
to embrace unity and view the country’s diversity as a source of strength
rather than division. He made the remarks on Wednesday in Jos, Plateau State,
during a courtesy visit to the Gbong Gwom Jos, His Royal Majesty Jacob Gyang
Buba, who is also the Chairman of the Plateau State Council of Chiefs and
Emirs.
Shettima stressed that shared heritage binds all
citizens, outweighing ethnic or religious differences. “We are all connected
one way or the other. What binds us together as a people supersedes whatever
threatens to separate us. There can be no development without peace,” he said.
The Vice President, in Plateau for the grand reception
of Governor Caleb Mutfwang and other political leaders into the All
Progressives Congress (APC), commended traditional rulers for their role in
maintaining social harmony. He described them as custodians of culture and
peace who play a vital role in fostering stability in their communities.
“They are not only custodians of our cultural
heritage; they also help in upholding society by constantly preaching peace
among their subjects,” Shettima added.
Highlighting growing political cooperation in the
state, Shettima welcomed the partnership between APC National Chairman Prof.
Nentawe Yilwatda and Governor Mutfwang, describing it as a positive development
for Plateau. “With their coming together, the state stands to enjoy more
dividends of democracy. That is good for the people,” he said, adding that the
collaboration would further enhance peace and stability both in Plateau and
nationwide.
Governor Mutfwang praised the working relationship
between President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Vice President, noting that it
remains focused on delivering good governance for Nigerians.
In his remarks, Gbong Gwom Jos called for stronger
security measures and genuine reconciliation to address challenges facing
Plateau State and other regions. “While we appreciate the efforts of the
security agencies, we appeal for more security and true reconciliation in all
parts of the country,” he said, urging Nigerians to respect one another and
reject violence.
The monarch emphasized that both Islam and
Christianity do not condone acts of insurgency or lawlessness. “We all believe
in God Almighty, so there is no justification for killing one another,” he
added.
Shettima concluded by expressing gratitude to the
government and people of Plateau State for their warm reception during the
visit.
