At least six people have died and 22 others
were injured during a crowd crush at a military recruitment
screening in Accra, Ghana, on Tuesday, November 11.
The tragic incident occurred at the El Wak Sports
Stadium, where thousands of young Ghanaians had gathered overnight
to take part in the 2025 Ghana Armed Forces recruitment exercise.
According to the BBC, the crush was triggered
by “an unexpected surge of applicants who breached security protocols and
rushed into the gates,” the Ghana Armed Forces said in a statement.
Army spokesperson Captain Veronica Adzo Arhin
confirmed that the incident happened before the event’s scheduled start time of
06:20 GMT. Five of the injured remain in critical condition.
Viral videos circulating online show massive crowds
lining up outside the stadium, with many jostling to gain entry.
Ghana, which currently faces a youth unemployment
rate of about 32%, often witnesses chaotic scenes during public
recruitment drives. Officials had reportedly extended the application
deadline by one week to accommodate more applicants after technical
difficulties in the submission process.
Authorities have promised a full investigation into
the cause of the tragedy.
