Nigeria’s Super Eagles have received a timely boost
ahead of their high-profile international friendly against Portugal, with
midfielder Alex Iwobi and defender Christian Akpan linking up with the squad in
Lisbon.
Iwobi arrived on Thursday to rejoin his teammates
after missing Nigeria’s recent friendly against Poland. His return provides
valuable experience and creativity to the midfield as preparations intensify
for the clash.
Akpan, who plays for Belgian club KRC Genk, has been
handed his first senior call-up following injuries and withdrawals in the
squad. The relatively unknown defender will be aiming to make his Super Eagles
debut against Portugal and impress head coach Éric Chelle.
Winger Samuel Chukwueze also reported to camp on
Friday afternoon, increasing the number of players in Lisbon to 22. Chukwueze
had been absent from recent international duties, including the Unity Cup and
the Poland friendly, following the passing and burial of his mother. He is now
expected to fully reintegrate and participate in training sessions.
Nigeria will face Portugal at the Estádio Municipal de
Leiria next Wednesday. Coach Chelle views the match as an important test ahead
of upcoming competitive fixtures, with the latest arrivals further bolstering
the squad for the encounter.
