The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has
begun a major enforcement operation against vehicles violating regulations on
tinted windows, concealed number plates, and improper registration.
Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja on Friday, June
5, the FCT Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Sanusi, said the initiative was
prompted by the increasing use of such vehicles in criminal activities across
the territory.
According to Sanusi, vehicles with illegal tinted
glass, covered number plates, or no proper registration are often used by
criminals involved in “one-chance” robberies, kidnappings, and other violent
offences, as they make it easier for suspects to hide their identities and
avoid detection by security agencies.
He noted that the situation poses a significant threat
to public safety, making strict enforcement of existing regulations necessary.
The commissioner clarified that the operation is not
targeted at law-abiding citizens who have obtained valid permits for tinted
windows. Instead, he explained, the exercise is aimed at preventing criminals
from exploiting such features to commit crimes against residents of the FCT.
Sanusi revealed that more than 30 vehicles have
already been impounded since the operation commenced. The vehicles were seized
for offences ranging from illegal tinting and concealed number plates to
failure to comply with registration requirements.
He warned that owners and operators of vehicles found
in violation of the regulations would face prosecution in line with the laws of
the Federation and the provisions of the FCT Road Transport Regulations 2023.
Reaffirming the command’s commitment to
intelligence-driven policing and proactive crime prevention, the police chief
urged residents to remain vigilant and support security agencies by reporting
suspicious vehicles, individuals, or activities through the appropriate
channels.
He also appealed for public cooperation and
understanding as enforcement operations continue across the Federal Capital
Territory.
