Nigeria national football team stepped up preparations
on Monday evening ahead of their opening fixture at the 2026 Unity Cup against
the Zimbabwe national football team in London.
The Nigerian squad trained at The Valley, with head
coach Eric Chelle supervising an intensive session involving 20 players as the
team finalized tactical preparations for Tuesday’s encounter.
Returning forward Terem Moffi was among the standout
figures during the training session, bringing added experience and attacking
quality to the relatively youthful squad selected for the invitational
tournament.
Goalkeepers Francis Uzoho, Arthur Okonkwo, and Michael
Atata all participated in the session alongside defenders Igoh Ogbu, Chibuike
Nwaiwu, and Tijani Al Ameen.
In midfield, promising talents including Tochukwu
Nnadi, Alhassan Yusuf, and Samson Tijani were involved, while attacking options
featured players such as Philip Otele, Rafiu Durosinmi, and Femi Azeez.
Tuesday’s match is expected to renew the growing
rivalry between Nigeria and Zimbabwe following two closely contested meetings
during the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign. Both encounters ended in
1-1 draws — first in Huye and later in Uyo.
With both teams now familiar with each other’s playing
style, fans are anticipating another competitive battle as the sides look to
finally establish superiority.
The Unity Cup tournament also features the Jamaica
national football team and the India national football team, who are scheduled
to face each other on Wednesday.
