Suspected herdsmen launched a deadly
attack late Sunday night on Tse Yange, a Tiv community in Obi Local Government
Area of Nasarawa State, killing the village head and abducting several
residents.
According to local sources, the attackers stormed the
remote agrarian settlement on motorbikes around midnight, shooting
indiscriminately and setting off panic among residents.
The invasion reportedly lasted into the early hours of
Monday, leaving scores injured and prompting an exodus of villagers fleeing for
safety.
“It was a coordinated attack. They came in large
numbers on motorbikes, went straight to the village head’s compound and shot
him dead,” a resident told PEAKNEWS ONLINE on condition of anonymity.
Although the number of abducted residents remains
unconfirmed as of press time, eyewitnesses said “several persons” were taken
away, while many others sustained varying degrees of injury.
The community has since been thrown into mourning,
with houses deserted and tension escalating amid fears of further violence.
Police authorities in Nasarawa are yet to release an
official statement on the incident, while efforts to reach security operatives
in the area proved abortive.
Tse Yange is one of several Tiv communities in
Nasarawa that have suffered repeated attacks linked to suspected armed
herdsmen, raising concerns over growing insecurity in the state’s border
regions.
Local leaders have called on the state government and
security agencies to intervene urgently to protect lives and property.
