A fire incident caused by a gas explosion triggered
panic at the Alake Sports Complex in Ijeja, Abeokuta—one of the primary venues
of the ongoing National Sports Festival in Ogun State.
The incident occurred shortly after 3:00 p.m. when a
gas truck delivering fuel to power the complex’s generating set reportedly
caught fire. Eyewitnesses said the sudden blaze sent athletes, officials, and
spectators fleeing in alarm.
Emergency responders swiftly arrived at the scene to
contain the situation, and the fire was successfully extinguished before it
could cause widespread damage. As of the time of reporting, no casualties have
been confirmed.
The Ogun State government has urged participants and
the public to remain calm, assuring that safety measures are in place to
protect all athletes and officials.
Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Strategy,
Kayode Akinmade, confirmed the incident and clarified that the fire involved a
diesel tanker. He added that prompt action by emergency services prevented the
situation from escalating.
“The fire was immediately put out, and there is no
cause for alarm. We are prioritizing the safety of all festival participants,”
Akinmade said.
Activities at the Alake Sports Complex are expected to
resume as scheduled following the swift containment of the fire.
