A fire incident caused by a gas explosion triggered panic at the Alake Sports Complex in Ijeja, Abeokuta—one of the primary venues of the ongoing National Sports Festival in Ogun State.

The incident occurred shortly after 3:00 p.m. when a gas truck delivering fuel to power the complex’s generating set reportedly caught fire. Eyewitnesses said the sudden blaze sent athletes, officials, and spectators fleeing in alarm.

The Ogun State government has urged participants and the public to remain calm, assuring that safety measures are in place to protect all athletes and officials.

Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Strategy, Kayode Akinmade, confirmed the incident and clarified that the fire involved a diesel tanker. He added that prompt action by emergency services prevented the situation from escalating.

“The fire was immediately put out, and there is no cause for alarm. We are prioritizing the safety of all festival participants,” Akinmade said.

Activities at the Alake Sports Complex are expected to resume as scheduled following the swift containment of the fire.
