Authorities in Karim-Lamido Local Government Area of
Taraba State have imposed a 24-hour curfew following a renewed wave of deadly
attacks by suspected armed militia groups that have left several people dead
and displaced numerous residents.
The violence reportedly targeted Wurkum communities in
and around Didango, Mutum Daya, Kodai, Gurum, and other neighbouring
settlements, where homes and properties were also destroyed during the attacks.
According to local sources, normalcy had begun to
return to some of the affected communities after security personnel were
deployed to the area earlier in the week. However, fresh assaults carried out
on Thursday and Friday reignited tensions and further worsened the security
situation.
In response to the escalating violence, the
Chairperson of Karim-Lamido Local Government Council, Mrs. Virginia Baba
Bambur, announced the immediate enforcement of a 24-hour curfew across the
affected communities.
In a statement, Bambur said the decision was necessary
to contain the deteriorating security situation, prevent further attacks, and
protect lives and property.
She directed all security agencies operating in the
area, including the Nigerian Army, the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of
State Services (DSS), and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC),
to ensure strict enforcement of the curfew.
The council chairperson also assured residents that
authorities would conduct a comprehensive investigation into the causes of the
crisis and take appropriate action against those responsible for the violence.
While calling on residents to remain calm and
cooperate with security agencies, Bambur emphasized that efforts were underway
to restore peace and stability to the affected communities.
Karim-Lamido Local Government Area has witnessed
repeated security challenges in recent years, including communal conflicts,
bandit attacks, and ethnic tensions involving the Karimjo and Wurkum
communities. These recurring clashes have resulted in loss of lives,
destruction of property, and the displacement of many residents.
Security agencies are expected to maintain a strong
presence in the area as efforts continue to prevent further violence and
restore order.
