An 18-year-old has been taken into custody on
suspicion of arson following a devastating fire that destroyed the historic Big
Mill.
Police confirmed the suspect, a local resident, is
being investigated for arson with recklessness as to whether lives were put at
risk.
The fire broke out at approximately 9:22pm at the
six-storey Grade II-listed building located on Mill Street, prompting emergency
evacuations as flames quickly spread through the structure.
According to Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service,
firefighters remained at the scene into Saturday as efforts continued to fully
contain the blaze.
Station Manager Jonathan Ashby stated that while the
fire had been brought under control, it had not yet been completely
extinguished due to safety concerns preventing crews from entering the
building. A wide safety cordon remains in place as emergency teams continue
their work.
Footage captured by drones showed intense flames
engulfing the structure, with sections of the building collapsing as
firefighters battled the inferno. Multiple emergency units, including aerial
ladder platforms, were deployed, while nearby roads such as the A523 Mill
Street were closed to the public.
The Big Mill, originally constructed in 1857, was a
significant historical site that once served as a major silk production
facility employing thousands. Although the building had been vacant in recent
years, it had received approval for redevelopment into residential apartments.
Local residents described the incident as terrifying,
with some recalling the loud sounds and intense heat as the fire spread.
Authorities have urged anyone with relevant CCTV or
dashcam footage to come forward as investigations continue.
