Gunmen have killed three herders along the Dorowa-Jong
road in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The attack occurred on Thursday night, February 19,
2026. The victims were reportedly ambushed while returning to Jong community
after attending Qur’an Tafsir in Dorowa at about 7:30 p.m.
The Plateau State Chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle
Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), Ibrahim Babayo, confirmed the
incident to journalists in Jos on Friday.
According to Babayo, the attackers shot the victims
and allegedly used sharp objects to behead one of them. He described the
assault as brutal and condemned it in strong terms.
Babayo alleged that the attack was carried out by
members of the Berom community, claiming that herders and their cattle have
been repeatedly targeted. He called on authorities to thoroughly investigate
the incident and bring those responsible to justice.
“This isn’t the first time our people have been
targeted. We seek protection and justice. We will not be provoked, but we
demand action from state and federal governments to protect our people and
livestock,” he said, while urging members of the association to remain calm and
law-abiding.
However, the National President of the Berom Youth
Moulders Association, Solomon Mwantiri, denied any involvement by the Berom
community, describing the allegation as unfounded and unwarranted. He noted
that security forces, including soldiers and the Divisional Police Officer in
Barkin Ladi, had visited the scene.
Spokesperson for Operation Enduring Peace, Captain
Chinonso Polycarp Oteh, confirmed the killings. He said the command received
reports of the incident around 11:00 p.m. on Thursday and immediately deployed
personnel to the area.
Oteh added that the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 3
Division and Commander of Operation Enduring Peace has expressed concern over
the attack and vowed that the perpetrators would be tracked down. He also
appealed to the affected families to remain calm as investigations continue.
