Three more former British athletes have been convicted
in Morocco in connection with a criminal case that has already seen former
Commonwealth champion Leon Baptiste sentenced to 10 months in prison for
sexually assaulting a 16-year-old girl.
The latest convictions bring the number of people
found guilty in connection with the case to six, with former British sprinter
Will Sharman, his brother Richard Sharman and former bobsleigh athlete Lamin
Deen convicted alongside associates Ashley O’Leary Jones and David Tuck.
The five men were convicted of “participating in
the enticement of a minor”, according to reports from Morocco and the BBC.
They were each handed four-month suspended prison
sentences and fined approximately £40.
However, the men have strongly denied knowingly
engaging in any criminal or improper conduct, insisting that they were unaware
of the girl’s age and did not understand that they had been criminally
convicted.
Five Men Convicted in Separate Proceedings
The five men involved in the latest convictions are
former Commonwealth silver medallist and British hurdler Will Sharman, his
brother Richard Sharman, former British bobsleigh athlete Lamin Deen, and
associates Ashley O’Leary Jones and David Tuck.
All five were found guilty of the same offence
relating to the alleged enticement of a minor.
They were, however, acquitted of a separate charge of
inciting a minor into prostitution.
The case came to wider attention after Baptiste was
initially reported missing while in Morocco, before it emerged that he was in
custody after being convicted by a Moroccan court.
The subsequent investigation brought the activities of
several other people who were reportedly connected to the case under scrutiny.
Convicted Men Deny Knowing Wrongdoing
The five men have rejected any suggestion that they
knowingly committed a criminal offence.
According to reports, they maintained that they were
unaware of the girl’s age and did not believe their actions constituted
criminal conduct.
Their representatives also reportedly said the men did
not initially understand that criminal convictions had been entered against
them.
They believed the financial penalties imposed on them
were administrative fines and said they had simply complied with instructions
from Moroccan authorities.
The men reportedly were neither detained nor summoned
to appear in court, leaving them shocked when they later learned that they had
been convicted.
Baptiste Serving 10-Month Prison Sentence
The case initially attracted significant attention
after it emerged that Baptiste, a former British sprinter and Commonwealth
champion, was serving a prison sentence in Morocco.
He was sentenced to 10 months after being convicted of
sexually assaulting a 16-year-old girl.
Baptiste had reportedly travelled to Morocco for
training before the events that led to the criminal proceedings.
His imprisonment came to light after he was initially
believed to be missing, prompting concern among those close to him.
The revelation subsequently led to greater scrutiny of
the circumstances surrounding his arrest and the involvement of others
connected to the case.
Police Raid Led to Investigation
According to reports, Moroccan police raided a villa
in Tamenscourt following a complaint from a 16-year-old girl who alleged that
she had been sexually exploited and assaulted.
The investigation subsequently resulted in criminal
proceedings against Baptiste and several others who were reportedly present or
connected to the events.
While Baptiste was convicted of sexual assault, the
other five men faced separate allegations relating to the alleged enticement of
a minor.
They were not convicted of the sexual assault offence
and were acquitted of the separate allegation involving incitement of a minor
into prostitution.
Former International Athletes Involved
Will Sharman’s conviction has attracted particular
attention because of his previous achievements in British athletics.
The former hurdler was a Commonwealth silver medallist
and represented Britain at major international competitions during his career.
His brother Richard also competed internationally in
bobsleigh, while Lamin Deen represented Britain in the sport at international
level.
The involvement of three former athletes has
consequently generated considerable interest within British sporting circles.
Despite their convictions, their representatives
maintain that none of the men knowingly participated in criminal conduct.
Legal Proceedings Under Scrutiny
The circumstances surrounding the convictions are
likely to remain a major focus of attention, particularly because the men
reportedly claim they did not understand the legal nature of the proceedings.
Their representatives said the men believed they had
only been required to pay administrative fines and comply with instructions
from Moroccan authorities.
The men have also maintained that they had no
knowledge of the girl’s age.
The five received suspended sentences, meaning they do
not immediately have to serve their prison terms unless circumstances arise
that activate the sentences.
The case has therefore raised broader questions about
how people involved in legal proceedings abroad understand foreign judicial
processes and the importance of obtaining appropriate legal representation.
For now, the five men continue to deny knowingly
engaging in unlawful conduct, while Baptiste remains imprisoned following his
separate sexual assault conviction.
