The Edo State Police Command has confirmed that three police officers were injured after a reckless driver rammed into a police checkpoint at Iyekogba Estate Gate, Benin City.
The incident was disclosed in a statement issued on Saturday by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eno Ikoedem.
According to the statement, the incident occurred when the driver drove against traffic, breached a police checkpoint barricade, made a turn, and deliberately drove back at officers on lawful duty, knocking them down.
“The reckless driver eventually crashed into multiple vehicles before being restrained and arrested. The injured officers are currently receiving medical attention,” the statement said.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the 19-year-old suspect, whose name was withheld, is an unlicensed driver.
The vehicle involved — a black Mercedes-Benz GLK SUV, valued at about ?28 million — was found to be unregistered, despite having been in use since May 2024.
Items recovered from the suspect included a substance suspected to be Canadian Loud and a Sprite bottle containing a sky-blue liquid, believed to be diluted refnol, the police said.
The Command recalled that on December 24, 2025, it had appealed to motorists to slow down at checkpoints and comply with lawful police checks in the interest of public safety.
Reiterating the directive, the police warned that:
“There is absolutely no justifiable reason for any motorist to speed through a police checkpoint except with the intention to evade lawful checks or endanger the lives of officers on duty.”
The Commissioner of Police, CP Monday Agbonika, stressed that anyone who deliberately attacks or attempts to harm police officers on lawful duty will not be spared, declaring that “enough is enough.”
The Edo State Police Command assured residents of its continued commitment to maintaining law and order and ensuring public safety across the state.
