Golf legend Tiger Woods has announced he will take a
break from the sport to focus on his health following his recent arrest in
Florida on suspicion of driving under the influence.
The 15-time major champion made the announcement in a
statement, acknowledging the seriousness of the situation and stating that he
needs time to seek treatment and prioritise his recovery.
Details of the Incident
The incident occurred near Woods’ residence in
Florida, where his SUV collided with a trailer being towed by a pickup truck.
Authorities at the scene reported that Woods showed
signs of impairment. Although a breathalyzer test did not detect alcohol,
officers found opioid pain medication in his possession.
He has pleaded not guilty to the charges, explaining
that he was distracted by his phone and adjusting the radio at the time of the
crash.
Charges and Legal Developments
Woods faces allegations including misdemeanor DUI with
property damage and refusal to comply with a lawful test after declining a
urine test.
He was later released on bail and has requested a jury
trial. His scheduled arraignment has also been waived.
Health Concerns and Injury History
The golfer’s physical condition has been a
long-standing concern. He previously sustained severe leg injuries in a 2021
car accident and has undergone multiple surgeries over the years.
According to police observations, Woods appeared
unsteady and fatigued at the scene, with reports describing slow movements and
difficulty walking.
Uncertain Return to Golf
Woods has not competed in a major event since the 2024
British Open and has faced additional setbacks, including a ruptured Achilles
tendon in 2025 and back surgery later that year.
He had recently hinted at a possible return to
competition, including attending events at Augusta National, but his latest
announcement puts those plans on hold.
Focus on Recovery
In his statement, Woods expressed his commitment to
returning stronger both personally and professionally, while also requesting
privacy for himself and his family during this period.
