President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved Nigeria’s bid
to host the prestigious CAF Awards as well as the 48th CAF Ordinary General
Assembly later this year.
The development was confirmed in a statement released
by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), which disclosed that the president
gave his endorsement during the ongoing Africa Forward Summit in Nairobi.
Tinubu announced the approval after a meeting with
Patrice Motsepe, president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
Also present at the meeting were Nigeria’s Minister of
Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, acting CAF General Secretary Samson
Adamu, NFF President Ibrahim Gusau, and former NFF president Amaju Pinnick.
The 48th CAF Ordinary General Assembly, scheduled for
October, is expected to attract major football stakeholders from across Africa,
including representatives from CAF’s 54 member associations, officials from its
six zonal unions, and senior football administrators.
The CAF Awards is regarded as one of the biggest
annual football events on the continent, recognising exceptional performances
by players, coaches, and football personalities across Africa.
Nigeria previously hosted the ceremony on January 6,
2017, when Riyad Mahrez won the Men’s African Player of the Year award, while
Asisat Oshoala claimed the women’s prize.
The 2025 edition of the CAF Awards took place in
Rabat, where Achraf Hakimi and Ghizlane Chebbak emerged as the men’s and
women’s African Footballers of the Year respectively.
Nigeria has also enjoyed recent success at the awards,
with Victor Osimhen winning the men’s award in 2023 and Ademola Lookman
claiming the honour in 2024. Oshoala also secured the women’s award in 2023,
extending her record haul to six continental titles.
CAF is expected to announce the final host city for
both events in the coming months.
