President Bola Tinubu has commended the National Drug
Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) following a major anti-narcotics breakthrough
announced by the agency on Wednesday.
Tinubu’s message was contained in a statement issued
on Thursday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
NDLEA Chairman Brigadier General Mohammed Buba Marwa
(retd.) had announced the breakthrough after what the agency described as a
large operation carried out with international partners, following weeks of
intelligence gathering and strategic planning.
According to Tinubu, the operation led to the arrest
of foreign nationals, local drug kingpins, and other collaborators, as well as
the seizure of chemicals and illicit drugs valued at over $360 million.
The President said the feat showed NDLEA’s
professionalism, courage, and commitment to protecting society from the harmful
effects of narcotics. He praised the dedication of NDLEA operatives and urged
the agency not to relent in the fight against drug trafficking.
Tinubu warned that West Africa is increasingly being
used as a transit hub for cocaine, synthetic drugs, and unregulated
pharmaceuticals bound for Europe and North America. He said the drug trade is
not only a serious security threat, but is also destroying the future of many
young people across the region.
He called on Nigerians to support the fight by
remaining vigilant and reporting suspicious activities in their communities to
relevant security agencies.
The President added that the success of the operation
serves as a warning to criminal networks, saying organised crime and threats to
public safety will not be tolerated anywhere in Nigeria. He said those
responsible will face the full wrath of the law.
