President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced the creation
of a special support fund for members of Nigeria’s armed forces, as well as
their families, to mark his 74th birthday.
In a personally signed statement on Sunday, the
president directed the Accountant-General of the Federation to establish a
dedicated account aimed at supporting injured personnel, as well as families of
fallen soldiers.
Tinubu also revealed that he will contribute all his
salaries since assuming office as initial funding for the initiative,
describing it as a personal commitment to those who serve the nation.
According to him, the fund will cater to wounded
service members, including those who have lost limbs, as well as widows,
widowers, and children of military personnel who died in the line of duty.
He called on state governors, members of the National
Assembly, the private sector, and Nigerians at large to support the initiative,
emphasizing that caring for soldiers and their families is a collective
national responsibility.
The president stressed that the effort is not an act
of charity but a duty owed to those who risk their lives for the country’s
peace and security.
Earlier, on December 2, 2025, Tinubu had launched the
2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day emblem and appeal fund at the State House in
Abuja. During the event, he donated ?200 million out of the ?320 million raised
and also introduced the “Thank a Soldier” digital platform.
He further announced plans by the Ministry of Defence
to deploy retired military personnel to help secure ungoverned areas.
Tinubu opted for a low-key celebration of his
birthday, citing the current national situation and ongoing economic reforms,
while still receiving goodwill messages from governors and other stakeholders
across the country.
