Nigeria has recorded another major achievement in
continental sports administration as Tonobok Okowa, President of the Athletics
Federation of Nigeria, AFN, has been elected Senior Vice President of the
Confederation of African Athletics, CAA.
Okowa emerged victorious during the CAA Executive
Council election after defeating two other candidates in a keenly contested
poll.
According to the results, Okowa secured six votes to
beat South Africa’s Dlamini Dakhele, who received four votes. Bruno Konga came
third with one vote out of the 11 votes cast.
His election is seen as a major boost for Nigeria’s
influence in African athletics administration and a recognition of the
country’s growing role in the development of the sport across the continent.
As Senior Vice President of the CAA, Okowa is expected
to play a key role in shaping decisions on athletics development in Africa,
including competitions, athletes’ welfare, grassroots programmes and
administrative reforms.
The victory comes at a time when Nigeria has continued
to make strong impressions in athletics, both in competitions and in sports
leadership.
Okowa has been credited with contributing to the
recent resurgence of Nigerian athletics, with the country recording improved
performances at continental and international events.
His emergence has been welcomed by members of the
Nigerian athletics community, who described it as a proud moment for the
country and a reward for years of dedication to the sport.
The development further strengthens Nigeria’s position
