Nigeria has recorded another major achievement in continental sports administration as Tonobok Okowa, President of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria, AFN, has been elected Senior Vice President of the Confederation of African Athletics, CAA.

Okowa emerged victorious during the CAA Executive Council election after defeating two other candidates in a keenly contested poll.

According to the results, Okowa secured six votes to beat South Africa’s Dlamini Dakhele, who received four votes. Bruno Konga came third with one vote out of the 11 votes cast.

His election is seen as a major boost for Nigeria’s influence in African athletics administration and a recognition of the country’s growing role in the development of the sport across the continent.

As Senior Vice President of the CAA, Okowa is expected to play a key role in shaping decisions on athletics development in Africa, including competitions, athletes’ welfare, grassroots programmes and administrative reforms.

The victory comes at a time when Nigeria has continued to make strong impressions in athletics, both in competitions and in sports leadership.

Okowa has been credited with contributing to the recent resurgence of Nigerian athletics, with the country recording improved performances at continental and international events.

His emergence has been welcomed by members of the Nigerian athletics community, who described it as a proud moment for the country and a reward for years of dedication to the sport.
