Iran has confirmed the killing of one of its most powerful security figures, Ali Larijani, in an Israeli airstrike on Tehran, marking a major escalation in the ongoing conflict between the two nations.

Larijani, a senior official and key figure within Iran’s security establishment, was reportedly killed in an overnight strike just days after he publicly criticised former U.S. President Donald Trump. He had been leading Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, the country’s highest security authority, and was widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in the government.

According to an Israeli military official, Larijani played a central role in directing operations across the region. “He was effectively the one calling the shots,” the official claimed, describing him as a de facto leader who coordinated attacks against multiple states.

Iranian authorities confirmed his death late Tuesday, though details surrounding the strike remain limited.

Larijani was last seen in public on Friday in Tehran during the annual Quds Day march—an event symbolising Iran’s longstanding opposition to Israel. At the gathering, the 67-year-old dismissed recent strikes on Tehran, describing them as acts of “desperation” by Israel and its allies.

His death represents another significant blow to Iran’s leadership amid the intensifying conflict. Reports also indicate that the war has claimed the life of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, further destabilising the country’s power structure.

Meanwhile, Mojtaba Khamenei, who has reportedly assumed leadership, has not appeared publicly since the outbreak of the conflict, raising speculation about his condition following the strike that allegedly killed his father.

The situation continues to heighten tensions in the region, with fears of further escalation growing.
