Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed the signing of
Scottish defender Andy Robertson on a free transfer following the expiration of
his contract with Liverpool.
The 32-year-old Scotland captain is set to officially
join Spurs on July 1, bringing an end to a highly successful eight-year spell
at Liverpool, where he established himself as one of the Premier League’s most
accomplished left-backs.
Robertson's arrival marks another significant step in
manager Roberto De Zerbi’s plans to strengthen Tottenham's squad after the club
narrowly avoided relegation last season, finishing just two points above the
drop zone.
In a video message shared by Tottenham on social
media, Robertson expressed his excitement about the move and his eagerness to
begin the next chapter of his career.
"Hi Tottenham fans, it's Andy Robertson
here," he said. "As you can see, I'm currently in America preparing
for the World Cup, but I wanted to send a message to say how excited I am to
join the club. I can't wait to meet the fans, play in the stadium for the first
time, and get started next season. See you all soon."
Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi welcomed the
signing, describing Robertson as a player whose experience and leadership
qualities will be invaluable to the squad.
"Andy is a player I have admired for many
years," De Zerbi said. "He brings exceptional technical ability,
leadership, experience, and a winning mentality. He has consistently performed
at the highest level and will be a major asset both on and off the pitch. I'm
looking forward to working with him and seeing the influence he can have on the
team."
Robertson joined Liverpool from Hull City in 2017 for
a reported £8 million and went on to become one of the club’s most influential
players during a golden era under Jürgen Klopp.
During his time at Anfield, he made 378 appearances
and won every major trophy available, including two Premier League titles and
the UEFA Champions League. However, his playing time became more limited last
season, with the defender making only 11 Premier League starts.
Now, Robertson will look to bring his wealth of
experience and winning pedigree to Tottenham as the North London club aims to
establish itself firmly in the Premier League and avoid another difficult
campaign.
