Traders at the popular Bode Traditional Herbs and
Other Products Market, popularly known as Iso Alagbo, in the Ibadan South-West
Local Government Area of Oyo State, are counting their losses after a
devastating fire razed parts of the market in the early hours of Friday.
According to reports, the fire started in one of the
shops before spreading rapidly to neighbouring stalls, destroying goods worth
millions of naira. The full extent of the damage is yet to be determined.
Many traders were left distraught as they watched
their shops and means of livelihood go up in flames.
One of the affected traders, who identified herself
simply as Mama Kaila, described the incident as one of the worst the market had
experienced in recent years.
"It’s been a long time since we experienced this
kind of incident in the market. The market leadership always advises us to be
careful with the electrical appliances in our various shops," she said.
"Our losses cannot be quantified. All I can say
for now is that they run into millions of naira."
Despite the destruction, she expressed gratitude that
no lives were lost in the incident and commended officials of the Oyo State
Fire Service for their swift response in containing the blaze.
The cause of the fire has not yet been officially
confirmed, while authorities are expected to assess the extent of the damage.
