A tragic incident has been reported in Maiduguri,
Borno State, where a 14-year-old secondary school student lost her life after
being struck by a stray bullet inside her residence.
The incident occurred on April 4, 2026, within the
residential quarters of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, where
the victim lived with her family.
According to available information, the bullet was
allegedly discharged during celebratory gunfire by military personnel attending
a nearby wedding ceremony. The teenager was said to have been indoors at the
time the bullet struck her, leading to fatal injuries.
A family source revealed that the young girl had
earlier been preparing to attend a wedding event with relatives before the
unfortunate incident occurred, turning what was meant to be a joyful day into a
moment of grief.
The victim has been identified as the daughter of Dr.
Jibril Khalil, a senior medical professional and Head of Cardiac Surgery at the
hospital’s Heart Centre.
She was laid to rest on April 5 at a cemetery in
Maiduguri, in line with local burial customs.
The heartbreaking incident has sparked concerns over
the dangers of celebratory gunfire, with many calling for stricter enforcement
of safety regulations to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
