United States President Donald Trump on Saturday,
February 28, announced that American and Israeli forces had launched what he
described as a “massive and ongoing operation” targeting Iran, warning Iranian
troops to surrender or face severe consequences.
In an eight-minute video shared on Truth Social, Trump
said the coordinated military campaign was designed to prevent Iran’s
leadership from posing threats to the United States and its allies.
“We are undertaking a massive and ongoing operation to
prevent this very wicked, radical dictatorship from threatening America and our
core national security interests,” he stated.
The military action follows weeks of heightened
tensions between Washington and Tehran. During that period, Trump repeatedly
urged Iranian authorities to accept a new nuclear agreement and criticised the
government over its crackdown on protesters earlier in the year.
Ahead of the strikes, the US reportedly repositioned
more than a dozen naval ships and aircraft to the Middle East, signaling
preparations for possible military engagement. The deployments occurred even as
American officials continued indirect negotiations with Iranian representatives
over the country’s nuclear programme.
Outlining the objectives of the operation, Trump said
the campaign would be decisive.
“We will destroy their missiles and raze their missile
industry. We will annihilate their Navy and ensure that the region’s terrorist
proxies can no longer destabilize the region,” he declared.
The president maintained that the US had made multiple
diplomatic efforts to limit Iran’s nuclear ambitions but claimed Iranian
leaders rejected those overtures.
“This regime will soon learn that no one should
challenge the strength and might of the United States armed forces,” he said.
Trump also acknowledged the potential human cost of
the conflict, noting that American troops could suffer casualties.
“The Iranian regime seeks to kill. The lives of
courageous American heroes may be lost and we may have casualties. That often
happens in war,” he said, adding that the operation was necessary to secure
long-term stability and protect national interests.
