Israel announced early Saturday that it had carried
out what it described as a “pre-emptive” military operation against Iran,
significantly heightening tensions across the Middle East and sparking concerns
of a wider regional conflict.
Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz said the strikes
were intended to counter what he called imminent threats facing the country.
“The State of Israel launched a pre-emptive attack
against Iran to remove threats to the State of Israel,” Katz stated.
A senior Israeli defence official disclosed that the
operation had been in development for several months and was coordinated with
the United States. According to the official, the final decision on timing was
made weeks in advance.
