Akure, Ondo State – Two
students of Adekunle Ajasin University (AAUA), Akungba-Akoko, have been
arrested by the police in connection with the alleged conspiracy and rape of a
20-year-old female student of the same institution.
Spokesperson of the Ondo
State Police Command, Olusola Ayanlade, confirmed the arrests in a statement on
Tuesday, providing details of the incident.
Details of the Incident
According to the police, the
victim was invited to the residence of her long-time friend, Queen Sodo, 19,
also a student of AAUA. Trusting their friendship, which dated back to
secondary school, the victim accepted a drink provided by Sodo. The drink was
later found to have been laced with drugs, causing the victim to lose
consciousness.
The police stated that Sodo
left the room and summoned a male co-conspirator, keeping watch while the
alleged crime took place. Noise from the victim alerted a neighbour, who
intervened and rescued her.
“The victim was found naked,
unconscious, and in a compromising position with the arrested male suspect. She
was immediately taken for urgent medical attention and has since been referred
to a specialist hospital for further care,” Ayanlade said.
Investigation and Confession
Both suspects have
reportedly confessed to their roles in the crime. Evidence, including the
bottle containing the drug-laced drink, has been recovered and identified by
the victim and the suspects as connected to the incident.
The suspects are currently
in lawful custody, with plans to transfer them to the Gender Desk Office in
Akure for further investigation and subsequent prosecution.
The police assured the
public that all criminal elements in the state would be apprehended and brought
to justice.
