Two candidates of the Unified Tertiary Matriculation
Examination (UTME) who were kidnapped along the Makurdi–Otukpo road in Benue
State have regained their freedom after escaping from their captors.
The Nigeria Police Force in Benue State confirmed the
development on Friday, April 17, noting that one suspect has been arrested in
connection with the incident.
The victims were among passengers abducted on
Wednesday night when gunmen attacked a commercial bus operated by Benue Links
in Otukpo Local Government Area.
Police spokesperson Udeme Edet stated that
investigations identified the vehicle as a Toyota Hiace bus and that multiple
tactical units, including the Anti-Kidnapping Unit, have been deployed to
pursue the perpetrators.
She added that security agencies are intensifying
efforts to rescue the remaining victims and bring those responsible to justice.
Authorities also clarified that earlier reports
suggesting all passengers were UTME candidates were inaccurate, explaining that
only some of those on board were examination candidates.
The police assured the public of continued operations
in collaboration with other security agencies to ensure the safe return of
those still in captivity.
