Nigeria’s Victor Osimhen was visibly emotional as
Galatasaray S.K. supporters unveiled a tifo in his and his late mother’s honor
before their Champions League round of 16 first-leg match against Liverpool
F.C..
The massive banner displayed a portrait of Osimhen in
the Galatasaray jersey alongside a depiction of his mother. A message on the
display read: “We are family, and family is everything.” As the
Champions League anthem played at Rams Park, Osimhen was moved to tears and was
consoled by teammate Lucas Torreira before exchanging handshakes with Liverpool
players.
Taking to Instagram after the match, the Lagos-born
striker expressed his gratitude: “Tonight was emotional for me as I
struggled to hold back my tears. Seeing this show of love from Galatasaray fans
is something I will never forget. From the first day I arrived, you welcomed me
with so much love and respect, not only me but also my family and the people
close to me. Moments like this remind me that football is bigger than just the
game. It is love, loyalty, and unity. I promise to continue fighting for this
badge, this club, and these amazing fans with everything I have every time I step
on this pitch.”
Although Osimhen did not score, he played a pivotal
role in Galatasaray’s 1-0 victory. His header from a corner led to Gabonese
midfielder Mario Lemina redirecting the ball into the net in the seventh
minute. Osimhen’s pace, aerial dominance, and physicality continually troubled
Liverpool’s defense.
Tuesday’s result marked the second win over Liverpool
for the Turkish champions this season. Galatasaray will host Basaksehir in the
Turkish Super Lig this weekend before the return leg at Anfield next week.
