Vice President Kashim Shettima arrived in Conakry,
Guinea, on Friday to represent President Bola Tinubu at the inauguration of
President-elect Mamadi Doumbouya, scheduled for Saturday at the GLC Stadium in
Nongo.
Shettima’s official aircraft touched down at Ahmed
Sekou Toure International Airport around 3:10 p.m., where he was received by
top government officials, including Guinea’s Minister of Finance, Mourana
Soumah, and Nigeria’s Charge d’Affaires in Guinea, Ibrahim Haladu.
The inauguration follows Doumbouya’s victory in the
December 2025 general elections, marking the formal conclusion of a four-year
military transition in the country. Shettima’s attendance underscores Nigeria’s
leadership role within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS)
and its commitment to supporting the restoration of constitutional governance
across the sub-region.
The visit also aims to strengthen bilateral economic
ties between Nigeria and Guinea. Recent trade figures show Nigerian exports to
Guinea, particularly in manufactured goods and agricultural products, have
risen to $3.29 million.
From Guinea, Shettima will travel to Davos-Klosters,
Switzerland, to participate in the 56th Annual Meeting of the World Economic
Forum (WEF 2026) from January 19 to 23. The forum, themed “A Spirit of
Dialogue,” will bring together leaders from government, business, civil
society, and the scientific and cultural communities to promote collaboration,
innovative solutions, and sustainable global development.
Key discussions at WEF 2026 will focus on emerging
technologies, including artificial intelligence, quantum computing,
next-generation biotechnology, and advanced energy systems, with an emphasis on
responsibly deploying innovations to drive economic growth, expand access in
emerging markets, and build a resilient, inclusive workforce.
During his engagements, the Vice President is expected
to highlight Nigeria’s economic reform agenda, investment opportunities, and
Africa’s pivotal role in shaping a sustainable and inclusive global future.
Shettima is scheduled to return to Nigeria after
completing his engagements in Davos.
