Federal Government is committed to fighting corruption to restore public trust in government and protect civil liberties, Minister of Justice Lateef Fagbemi has said.

Fagbemi emphasized that corruption is a profound violation of human rights and dignity, robbing governments of resources meant for essential public services.

“The aim is to restore public trust in government, and our commitment to combating corruption must go hand in hand with steadfast dedication to the rule of law, due process, and protection of civil liberties,” Fagbemi said.

He called for building resilient institutions and a culture of dignity where every citizen is treated fairly.

Fagbemi stressed the importance of value-based governance, prioritizing integrity, empathy, and ethical leadership.

“Every public servant must embrace the principles that a citizen is sovereign and that public office is a public trust,” he said.

The minister’s remarks were echoed by other stakeholders, including the Head of Technical Unit on Governance and Anti-Corruption Reforms (TUGAR), Jane Onwumere, and the Executive Secretary of Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI), Orji Ogbonnaya Orji, who emphasized the need for collaboration and commitment to transparency and accountability.

The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, represented by Assistant Inspector-General of Police Victor Olaiye, noted that Nigeria needs individuals with strong integrity to effectively combat corruption.

“The presence of individuals who embody honesty and ethical conduct in public service is vital for fostering a culture of accountability and transparency,” he said.
