Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom
Wike, has rejected allegations that opposition parties are being targeted under
the current administration.
Speaking during an interview in Abuja, Wike described
such claims as exaggerated, insisting that the present political environment
does not compare to what he experienced in the past.
‘Opposition Not Being Crushed’
Wike stated that accusations against the ruling All
Progressives Congress (APC) and President Bola Tinubu are unfounded.
He argued that opposition parties are not being
deliberately weakened, adding that political competition naturally involves
strategic actions from all sides.
References Past Experience Under Buhari
The minister recalled his time under former President
Muhammadu Buhari, claiming he faced intense political pressure during that
period.
He pointed to internal crises within the Peoples
Democratic Party (PDP), including legal battles that reached the Supreme Court,
as examples of the challenges he endured.
Comments on ADC Leadership Crisis
Wike also addressed ongoing disputes within the
African Democratic Congress (ADC), which have drawn attention from the
Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
He suggested that such conflicts are part of normal
political processes and should not be misinterpreted as government
interference.
Politics as a Game of Strategy
According to Wike, both ruling and opposition parties
often seek advantages within legal and institutional frameworks.
He emphasized that political manoeuvring is an
inherent aspect of democracy, noting that parties will always exploit
opportunities available to them.
Debate Over Nigeria’s Political Climate
His remarks come amid growing debate over the state of
Nigeria’s political system, with critics raising concerns about fairness and
balance ahead of the 2027 elections.
