PORT HARCOURT, Nigeria — Robinson Ewor, factional
chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers State, has accused
Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), of working to
destroy the opposition from within, insisting that Wike should no longer be
regarded as a member of the PDP.
Ewor made the comments on Monday during an interview
on The Morning Show, a programme aired on Arise Television.
According to him, Wike’s open allegiance to the All
Progressives Congress (APC), under which he currently serves in President Bola
Tinubu’s cabinet, disqualifies him from continued involvement in PDP affairs.
“Nyesom Wike today exists in PDP because he’s on a
mission to destroy the PDP, to destroy the opposition in the country, not just
Rivers State,” Ewor said.
He accused Wike of interfering in the internal
workings of the PDP while simultaneously serving in an APC-led federal
government, citing the minister’s support for Sam Anyanwu to remain as the
party’s national secretary.
“What is his business? You are serving an APC
government. You have pledged your loyalty to the APC. You have said it openly
and publicly that you will support the APC in the 2027 general election,” Ewor
added.
“No Longer One of Us”
Ewor said Wike’s continued influence in the PDP is a calculated effort to
undermine the opposition, both in Rivers State and nationally.
“To us in Rivers, Wike is no longer a member of the
PDP. He’s only here to destroy the PDP, to destroy the opposition,” he said,
alleging that the presidency was backing Wike in this effort. “The president is
funding Wike to destroy the opposition. That is the irony of it.”
Wike: “I Wanted Fubara Removed”
The comments come days after Wike admitted to pushing for the removal of Rivers
State Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
“As a politician, I am not happy about the state of
emergency in Rivers State. I wanted the outright removal of Governor Fubara,”
Wike said in a statement on Friday. “The president, by declaring a state of
emergency, saved Fubara.”
The political rift between Wike and Fubara has
deepened internal tensions in Rivers PDP, fueling wider national debate over
Wike’s loyalty and the future of the opposition party ahead of the 2027
elections.
