The Nigeria National League (NNL) Super Eight race
intensified over the weekend as Wikki Tourists of Bauchi and Barau FC of Kano
sealed their places in the highly anticipated season-ending tournament, joining
Yobe Desert Stars and Doma United.
Wikki Tourists booked their Super Eight ticket in
emphatic fashion with a dominant 4-1 victory over Zamfara United at the
Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Stadium, Bauchi. Led by coach Abdullahi Maikaba, the
Elephants topped Conference C after 14 games with 23 points and an impressive
+11 goal difference.
Barau FC , in their debut season, clinched second
place in the conference with 19 points and a +4 goal difference. The Kano-based
side held their nerve in a tense goalless draw against Mighty Jets of Jos at
the New Jos Stadium, enough to secure their historic qualification.
However, it was a day to forget for Zamfara United.
The heavy defeat to Wikki Tourists, combined with Jigawa Golden Stars’ narrow
1-0 win over Sokoto United, condemned Zamfara to relegation. Jigawa’s vital
three points lifted them out of danger, while Zamfara slid into the drop zone.
With two more spots now claimed, the battle for Super
Eight glory continues as the NNL inches closer to the season finale, where
promotion to the Nigeria Premier Football League will be on the line
